The adventure seekers have found themselves a new address,
Costa Rica. Virtually unknown as a diver's destination less than 10
years back, this place now scores high with all the divers. The new
facilities have been developed along the coastline offering diving
boats and equipment. The hitherto unexplored treasure of beautiful
marine plants and animals has now caught the fancy of many. The
chief areas where you can go scuba diving are:
The Gulf of Papagayo
It is one of the best areas available for diving in the Guanacaste
area. You could choose this amidst an array of 20 sites. Your
companions in the sea are going to be triggerfish, frogfish, cornet
fish, angelfish, scorpion fish and seahorses. Look deeper to
unearth the treasure and along the rocks you will find yellow and
black striped juvenile drums, blennies and nudibrachs. The rays
abound in this habitat and you can find any number of rays
including southern stingray, spotted eagle rays, shovel rays and
devil rays. You can also find here sharks and whales.
Isla del Coco National Park
The beauty of this island and its natural importance has earned it
the World heritage status. The Island has a jagged coastline and
abounds in marine wealth. It is home to some of the most
scintillating marine species. The island boasts of white tip reef
sharks, schooling hammerhead sharks, jacks, tuna, Creole fish,
silky sharks, silver tip sharks, marlin, dolphins, mantas, marbled
rays, giant moray eels and sailfish, green turtles and octopus.
Scuba Diving in Cahuita Point
The most breathtaking sight of the coral reefs is to
be seen at the Cahuita Point. The reefs extend to some 500 meters
from the Cahuita point. Not only does it have a line-up of endless
beauty of corals but is also home to marine wonders like giant
elkhorns. The place also has two wrecked ships. The best visibility
is in the period from February to April.
Scuba Diving in Punta Gorda
Situated 6 kms away from El Ocotal this beautiful island houses
some 10,000 rays as well as lets you have a look at the hard
corals. The other sea creatures found here in abundance are
sergeant majors, grunts, stonefish, and sea horses. The depth of
the place varies from 15 feet to about 80 ft on the higher
side.
Scuba Diving in Murcielagos Island
This is one of the best-known diving sites in the Costa Rica for
its marine wildlife. The region also gives out dive-boats. One can
find here many marine species like grouper, snapper, jacks, sharks,
mantas, as well as tropical species, Cortez angelfish, bright
yellow butterflies and eagle rays are common. Great bull sharks
conglomerate at the farthest point in Murcielago.
