Location
Named after an active volcano, Arenal National Park lies in the
vicinity of 1633m volcanic cone that makes its head out of green
landscapes, towards the eastern end of Lake Arenal. Further, the
eastern end of the lake, known as La Fortuna, is a gateway to the
Arenal Volcano National Park and Caño Negro Reserve, while the
western side of the lake connects to town of Tilirán, famous
for windsurfing. San Ramon offers direct route to the National Park
via the auto pista or the Interamerica Highway.
Features
The Arenal Volcano is the only volcano in Costa Rica that has been
constantly active for the past 400 years. It witnessed a huge 1968
eruption, producing huge amounts of ash columns, explosions and the
glowing red lava. The Arenal volcano is the most happening sight
for all those who visit the Arenal National Park. In order to enjoy
the sparkling and dazzling sight, the tourists prefer to visit the
park at night to watch the red hot lava flowing and embers, putting
forward a spectacular art work.
Climate
The general surroundings of Arenal National Park are cool. The
winters are not too frigid, and the summers are not too hot.
Windsurfing can be enjoyed from November through January, when the
average wind speed is 24 miles per hour. Only June through October
are relatively calm. The temperature generally varies between 10
degree Celsius and 25 degree Celsius.
Prime Activities
Arenal National Park offers an ideal place for fishing excursions
on Lake Arenal, besides arranging for cheap and delicious bass
dinners. Further, Arenal National Park is also considered to be
important, since it has several water resources, which drain into
the Arenal Reservoir. It is used for the protection of electricity
and in fish farming projects in the Moracia Irrigation District.
The windsurfing on lake Arenal is a world-class adventure. Also,
there is an array of giant wind driven turbines generating
electricity on the western end of the lake. The water of the lake
is warm and crystal clear and you can also opt to swim.
Flora and Fauna
Arenal National Park offers wide diversity of floral species such
as the mountain guayabo, freijo, rosewood, chicle tree, balsa and
others. The main species of fauna include: paca, Baird's tapir,
white-nosed coati, sloth and deer. You can also view birds such as
parrots, parakeets and resplendent quetzals. Also, it houses some
snakes like the parrot snake, fer-de-lance and boa constrictor.
Tourists can watch snakes moving across roadside that winds through
the Arenal area.
