Location
Chirripo National Park is located on the Talamanca Mountain Range,
northeast of the town of San Isidro de General. The park occupies
50,920 Hectares of land area and is included in La Amistad
Pacífico Conservation range.
Topography
Chirripó National Park is a grandeur network of rugged peaks
and rock formations, vast valley and glacier lakes. Tourists
intending to visit the park will surely be captivated by the great
mountain peaks amid small water falls. Chirripó Peak, which is
the highest in the Talamanca Mountain Range, reaches a height of 3
820 meters. It is the tallest mountain in the southern part of
Central America.
Climate
The weather in and around Chirripo National Park is rapidly
changing and hazardous. Be wary of the bitterly cold wind. Winds
can approach at 160 kilometer per hour at high altitudes. The
humidity and wind-chill factor drop temperatures to -5°
Celsius.
Rainfall also occurs during the "dry season," and a short
rainstorm usually occurs at mid-afternoon. Fog is almost regular on
higher terrains of the park, thus keeping the surroundings
hazy.
Temperatures can fall below freezing at night. February and
March are the driest months. The upper summits of Chirripó
National Park are often cold and almost clad in mist.
Limitations
National Parks Service, a scheme envisaged to
protect the wear and tear of different trails has been a success.
This programme has curtailed the visitor strength to only 60 at any
one time. Further, no tourist is allowed to hike without a
guide.
Flora and Fauna
The park comprises different areas such as the northernmost
páramo and the rain forest. The cliff region of the park
contains six areas which are of geological and ecological
importance. These areas have been named as Sabana de los Leones,
Morrenas Valleys, Cerro Ventisqueros, Cerro Chirripo, Valle de los
Lagos and Valle de los Conejos.
The rain forests of Chirripo National Park are characterized by
great variety of arbores cent ferns, moss, palms, orchids and
bromeliads, which are distributed in different areas. Coyotes,
jaguars and other felines, squirrels, rabbits, frogs, bird's owls
and quetzals are also among other species of animals.
Also, tourists would certainly love to enjoy the portion
popularly known as Savannah of the Lions, named primarily after
large population of pumas. Tapirs and jaguars both are a common
sight to the visitors at Chirripo National Park.
