Location
Orosi (Tapantí) National Park is situated in the wild and wet
rain forested northern slopes of the Talamanca mountain Range along
the headwaters of Rio Grande de Orosi. The administration building
is located between the town of Orosi and the park.
Topography
The altitude of Orosi (Tapantí) National Park ranges from
1,220.560 meters to 4,002.397 meters above sea level. Tapanti has
four different life zones, namely Pre-mountain Rain Forest,
Pre-mountain Forest, Low Mountain Rain Forest and the Mountain Rain
Forest.
Climate
Tapanti National Park is distinctive for being one of Costa Rica's
most wet areas. It receives rainfall during the month of October.
The average annual temperature is 20ºCelsius. The average
annual rainfall is 6.500 millimeters.
Flora and Fauna
Orosi (Tapantí) National Park is inhabited by somewhere around
45 species of mammals, 28 species of amphibians, 28 different
species of reptiles; besides 260 species of birds. Key mammal
species include the endangered tapir, pace, brocket deer, cotton
tail rabbit, kinkajou, racoon, coatimundi, white face monkey,
agouti; besides wild cats like ocelot, jaguarundi and margay.
Bird species include quetzals, hawks, falcons, black guan, scoly
robin, tinamou, tanagers, pigeons, doves, oropendola, golden
oriole, among others. Many lizards, basilisks and snakes such as
the Picado Pitviper, eyelash viper, jumping viper and side-striped
palm pit viper are commonly visible to a passerby. Amphibians
include salamanders, frogs and toads.
The park is also inhabited by rare species of insects. Among the
moths, the Thysania agripina is the largest found within North and
South America. There are also various species of bees, butterflies
wasps and crickets.
The vegetation belt categorizes different species of bromeliads,
ferns, epiphytes, palms, moss, orchids, and heliconias.
Services
Orosi (Tapantí) National Park offers an exciting way out to
national and the international tourists. The activities include
Camping, picnic grounds, hiking both on marked and unmarked trials,
besides licensed swimming and fishing.
Precautions
The park authorities follow a strict regimen. Tourists and visitors
are expected to follow rules and guidelines laid down by the
authorities.
It is obvious that many-a-times tourists might not be able to
catch the sight of certain animals, primarily owing to their
migratory or reproductive habitats. Visitors going to the park
should move quietly and tenderly. In case of any queries, the
rangers are there willing to help you. Do not play radios or make
loud noises that might harm animals, besides disturbing the
calmness of surroundings. Though visitors are allowed to capture
the beauty of the park in their camera, however, they should not
engage themselves in undesirable activities such as removing
plants, stones or other materials as souvenirs.
They should not t litter the place with personal garbage or feed
the animals as it is extremely hazardous to natural habitats of
animals to which they are accustomed.
