Tortuguero National ParkTortuguero National Park is home to a very large flora and fauna, the reason for the creation of the park. The Park lies on the alluvial plains of the Nicaragua Trench, which was filled with sediments millions of years ago. These sediments are now the marshy islands, the breeding site for the turtles now. This is also one of the best-known parks since it serves as a refuge for the various species of turtles and the number of habitats it has.


Location

The Tortuguero National Park is located in the Limón province, Caribbean Coast. The chief attraction of the place is the nesting turtles. The species one can find here are Green sea, leatherback, baula, Carey and hawksbill. The Tortuguero National Park covers a total area of about 19,000 hectares.

Animal Species
The Tortuguero National Park has 11 diverse habitats ranging from high rainforest to herbaceous marsh communities. The park has a rich and diverse wildlife. There are 309 species of birds that have been identified, 110 reptiles and 60 mammals, and 52 species of fishes. The birds and animals one can easily spot here are the jaguar, the ocelot, manatees, macaw, turkey vulture, black hawk and the howler, white-faced capuchin and spider monkeys. The canals and lagoons form a part of the geography of the area, resulting in many habitats for fishes and other marine creatures like crocodiles, turtles, manatees, and crabs.

Flora
There are many species of trees that could be found here like the tamarind, crab wood, coconut trees, bully tree, orchids, banak, hollio palm, and heliconias. But, this isn't one of the places where walking around the place would be the best way to discover it. You can go through the marked trails in the parks providing the sights of turtle nesting.

Tortuguero National Park Climate
The Park gets abundant rainfall. It is located in one of the wettest regions of the country. It receives about 5000 to 6000 mm of rains every year.

Activities
You could also go kayaking or canoeing here. The park is also home to an extensive number of creeks and canals where one could catch the sight of any of the seven turtle species or catch the sights of a diverse species of birds and animals like Spider, Howler and Capuchin Monkeys. You can also go for sailing on a tour boat or paddle a canoe here. If you get lucky then you might also witness a newly hatched turtle-race.
