Location
The Central Valley is situated south of San Jose, the capital of
Costa Rica and is an important political and business center. The
Central Valley has very fertile soils due to the presence of
volcanoes.
Exploring Central Valley
The major tourist attractions at the Central Valley are the
volcanoes, Volcán Poás and Volcán Irazú.
Volcán Poás lies in a park and has forever been a center
of attraction for the tourists. It is an active volcano and last
time it had erupted was in the 1950s. The volcano has a large
crater that emanates steam and bubbles. As of now the volcano
seemingly doesn't pose any threats. There is an observatory where
you can have a look at its center. You can also have a look around
at the nearby forest, which has some plants and trees of unusual
shapes due to the presence of volcanic soil. One can also spot
birds like hummingbirds, mountain robins or brown jays.
The Volcán Irazú is located in the Irazu Volcano
National Park. The park is built in a circular shape around the
volcano. The main crater is 1050 meters in diameter. Another crater
dotting this lunar landscape like terrain is the Diego de a Haya
Crater. Diego de a Haya Crater is 690 meters in diameter and 100
meters deep. Around the volcano is also a lake, changing its colors
from green to red at times. An hour's drive to the southeast of San
Jose lies the beautiful Orosi Valley. The valley has some 600
species of orchids, spread over a vast expanse resulting in the
beautiful sights of the flowerbeds. Visiting the Orosi Valley is a
visual treat. One of the chief attractions at the place also
includes a visit to the La Paz waterfall Gardens. The trip features
splendid waterfalls, butterfly observatory as well as a hummingbird
garden. You can find here the maximum number of hummingbirds. You
can also feed the birds or more interestingly release a newly
emerged butterfly. The butterfly observatory has a number of
butterflies, which move about in their natural habitat.
Heritage
Almost 60% of the population stays at the Central valley. The
Central Valley has a conservative culture, unlike San Jose. The
place also has a rich coffee culture and you can take a coffee tour
at Café Britt. The tour will take you around to the
plantations or the fianca and coffee processing facility.
You can savor an aromatic cup of coffee at Café Britt or you
can pick up any of the coffee beans to plant them in your home.
